Replacing mulched area with grass

qillerMay 29, 2009

I've been thinking about replacing about 1300 sq.ft. area covered with mulch that we've got from the previous house owners. That was a kids play area, but that's a lot of mulch to be maintained, and I'd prefer green grass over a "red sea".

It's about 1.5-2" of mulch, laying on top of clay and been draining pretty well, and pretty much leveled with the rest of the lawn.

What's the best way to approach that? Just get it tilled and add just a bit of topsoil to avoid changing the grade? Remove mulch and replace with the same 2" topsoil? Or are there other better options?

If I were you, I'd remove the mulch and add soil. If you don't, as the mulch decomposes it will settle.

If you're going to seed, you should probably wait until the end of the summer (after the heat breaks) to seed. I'd leave the mulch in place until just before seeding. It will stop weeds from growing and also will add organic matter to the soil that is there.
