Hi Debby, I'll try to add a couple for you too.

Plant seeds of love (Make it cute with a heart on it)
Perch long~chirp much~sing often (Sort of for the birds)
Join us for a bucket of fun (Good for vegetable garden or orchard)
Peace & Plenty (Again for a garden or orchard)
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may
Take time to smell the flowers
To everything there is a season
Make room in your garden for the angels to dance

That's all I can come up with for now.

I have been making some lists of sayings. Not up to date tho and have a very long list. Here are a few. I do not take credit for them tho....
--You can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt.
--Gardening requires lots of water - most of it in the form of perspiration!
--A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows.
--The thing I grow most in my garden is tired.
--The difference between a flower and a weed is a judgment.
--Weeds ... All you can pick ... FREE!
--Herbs add spice to your life.
--Weeds? Those are native wildflowers!

--ZucchiniÂs terrific...
Like bunnies, prolific!

--Time began in a garden
--Nothing bugs me in my garden
--Welcome to my garden
--I'm in the garden
--Out back weedin'
--Kissed by the sun
--Fairies dance here
--Die weeds die
--Snail crossing
--Please grow!

Gardening-just another day at the plant.
Never enough thyme
When heaven falls to Earth, it becomes a Garden.
Compost....because a rind is a terrible thing to waste
Between these weeds, flowers grow

A garden poem for a sign:

"Roses are Red, Violets are blue,
This garden won't weed itself, So get to it...
...Okay, so I was never good at poetry"

Some others:
Grow Dammit!!
I tried but it died"
I make dirt look good
We're bloomin' crazy
A tomato in the hand is worth two on the bush

Flower
from the Latin flor- meaning "that which I cannot grow"

Mojo, here's a pic of my sign. I think it would be good on a pole with a birdhouse too.

When I was a little girl, in the early '60's, autograph books were very popular. At a K of C summer picnic, I went around to all my parents friends, and had them sign my book.

One entry was:
Don't kiss by the garden gate. Love may be blind, but the neighbor's ain't !!

Ah ---to be so innocent in these days.

Cece, I hadn't thought about it in years, I have one of those autograph books around here somewhere. Mine must be from around the same time, late 50's, early 60's. Will have to dig it out and see if there are any garden related sayings in it.

This has been fun trying to think of something apropriate for a sign that hasn't already been mentioned. Sometimes just a simple "Welcome to my Garden" or "Secret Garden" or Garden of Earthly Delights" in another language can be fun.

Or, WHAT WEEDS?

Whoa there, folks!!!!!!!!

Goldenpond... um, it may mean (Or have meant?? The English language changes so quickly) that in the UK where the 'bugger' word originated but down in Ozzyland it does not have that meaning. You've been misinformed.

Remember that Johnny Depp movie, Donnie Brosco, where he explains all the uses for 'fugetaboutit' ('forget about it' to those who don't speak New York - incidently, I've used fugetaboutit in every way he explained!), bugger has several meanings - in the sign, 'Bugger the housework...' it basically saying 'Fugetaboutit!' You can also say 'bugger this', which would also mean forget about it or 'I'll deal with this later'.

Here's all the terms I could find for 'bugger':
bugger - general term for any person
bugger around - waste time
bugger me dead - exclamation of amazement
bugger off - go away!
bugger up - ruin; spoil
bugger all - nothing
buggered - broken; very tired
buggered if I know - haven't got a clue
buggered up - ruined; broken
buggerise around - waste time
buggerlugs - affectionate term used to mildly annoy somebody
buggery - a far away place

As you can see, not ONE refers to that word. I've never heard anyone substitute bugger for the 'F' word. Sorry if what I wrote is OT but I don't want anyone thinking I'd display anything with that connotation on this forum.

In defense of Cait, I've never heard of bugger translating to the "F" word. My family comes from England and bugger is used as a soft slang.

'Bugger off' means get lost
'What a bugger' means driving me crazy or what a nut

I'm with you todancewithwolves, this has been a great chuckle of a thread. Cait, don't sweat the "bugger" because having read so much of your stuff in this forum, I know that you weren't even thinking what was suggested. I, too, have never heard it translated to that particular word although I have read it in any number of romance novels (oops, my secret is out)set in England. I somehow never went there with that word.

Well, you guys have certainly set my winter projects. Now I have to make a bunch of signs to put up throughout my garden. Since I have gotten into gardening for butterflies, I wonder if they can read the signs and appreciate the humor??????

LOL Thanks Dances and Ms Faith. I'm not letting it bug me!!! ROFL

When I started creating my Our Lady Gardyn I knew I would want some signs in it and will eventually get around to making some. I like these two passages from the Bible:

Isaiah 40:8 "The grass withereth; the flowers fadeth; but the word of our God shall stand forever."

and

Matt 6:28 "Consider the lilies of the field, how the grow; they toil not, niether do they spin."

And because this is also a medieval garden, I've been searching for something medievally that references flowers/gardens and there's this I've saved by Chaucer:
"Herkneth thise blisful briddes how they synge,
And se the fresshe floures how they sprynge"

In modern English it means, "Mark now these happy birds, hear how they sing, And see all the fresh flowers, how they spring."

I just think it'd be cool to have something written on a sign in English that isn't in the English we know today. ;-)

Here are some sign ideas from a catalog we got recently. The link for it is below. They have lots of funny shirts, etc. Linda

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons (or bears, mountain lions, etc.).....
For you are crunchy and good with ketchup!

If you can't stand the heat
Don't tickle the dragon.

In the pasture of life
Don't be a cowpie.

Don't make me come out there.

Ask not for whom the dog barks.
It barks for thee.

Beware:
Dog can't hold its licker.

The sign that everyone requests me to make for them is: "Frog Parking--All Others Will Be Toad" I stencil frogs & flowers on a piece of an old fence board I paint white. The boards are old & the paint soaks in, so they look more off-white. I spray a coat of clear paint over them & hang with rusty wire that I curl on the ends & middle.

Larkspurlady, I definitely will have to make this one for my garden. It is just too good! (you can hear the frogs down in the slough behind my house in the summer time.)

The rest of you - what creative minds we have. And not a one of them is wasted but busy creating more fun than I have time to participate in.

Happy Holidays to each and everyone of you.

Hi, I just found this forum and love all that I have read. I like this thread and have one to offer. I picked up a rustic looking metal sign at a yard sale a couple of years ago that says "Old gardeners never die, they just spade away".
It is in my front porch garden by a huge rock and everyone comments on it.
I am loving all the wonderful ideas and so I hope it is okay if I hang around for a while.

The one thing all gardener's share is a belief in tomorrow.
Gardening often begins at daybreak...and ends with back break.
I live in the garden...I only sleep in the house.

I have read that the West Nile Mosquito is allergic to the Catnip Plant.

I think a garden and cats' just naturally go-together. I sense they enjoy watching as I plant...They zig-zag thru the rows of flowers...as I tell them, "You just better not break my plants"...I could swear they are smiling at me...they never hurt anything, and if they ever did...plants can be replaced! Hurry up Spring!

I used to hang a little plaque that read "Out back Weedin" on my front door knob whenever we were out in the back garden, so the kids would know to stop ringing the doorbell and look for us back there. My teenage son thought his dad and I were out back smoking WEED! LOL!

I've also liked the little bird house plaque that reads "Everybirdy Welcome."

A weed is just a flower our of place.

If you have time to read this sign then you
have time to weed.

I just stumbled across this website and immediately signed on! What a wonderful group!!

I also have a beautiful garden, altho here in the high Colorado Rockies it is currently sleeping under a beautiful bed of snow.

I have several signs in my garden, some are painted and hung on posts, some are painted on the two by four cross braces on my barnwood fence which encloses my garden area.

I tend toward the unusual in my gardens and love the dragon and fairy sayings - so thanks to all for the new ones I have seen posted here! Here are a few of my favorites that I've incorporated into my own gardens.

In a corner of my garden
where the wildflowers grow,
I sit and I ponder
how God has bless us so.
(This one is painted across four sections of the 2X4 cross fence - directly over my wildflower garden)

Meet me at the Garden Gate
(painted on a flat stone that sits in front of my old iron gate)

Beyond This Place There Be Dragons
(painted on an old piece of barnwood and hanging on a post at the exit of my garden)

Enter These Enchanted Woods - Ye Who Dare
(this is at the entrance to a tree covered and enclosed walkway that wanders behind my garden sheds, and is bordered by wildflower beds)

May You Always Hear The Whisper Of Wings.

Leave room in your garden for the Fairies to dance (or play)

It all began in a Garden

Thanks to everyone for a wonderful place to visit while I think about that garden I am so anxious to get back into!

How about these:

Feel free to talk to these plants - they understand.

So, this is not a garden of Eden - adjust!

Gardening: the most fun you can have with your pants on.

Time spent in a garden is not deducted from one's life span.

If they don't have gardens in Heaven - then I am not going!

A garden is not a matter of life and death - it's much more important then that.

I got to say - last two are my favorites!

They had beautiful sheet metal garden signs on stakes at the garden center the other day, but their price tags put them out of my reach. Each was a single word. I was drawn to the one which spelled "imagine" but there were others also nice.

I have only three homemade signs, all in my gnome garden. One is an old licence plate of a fish with legs and the word "evolve" on a stake with flowers painted on the back, another is a peace sign with flowers painted on an old large metal can top nailed to a spike, and the last is a white handcarved Victorian style spindle with the word "change" in blue down the side.

A friend of ours worked at a feed and garden store many years ago and he placed little humorous signs about the place. The only one I remember was "begonias become yas" in front of a bin of begonia seeds or bulbs.

Linda and Cait, your signs are hilarious!

I'm remembering the signs at the garden center last week. A couple of the other metal words on stakes were "peaceful" and "relax." I need to stop thinking about those signs or I will blow the budget and go buy one!

My grandfather had this sign in his house, made for him by his son probably 30 years ago: "You're nearer God's heart in a garden than anywhere else on earth".

Has anyone else heard that one?

cricket, that's a nice one.

This is my practice sign. I tore apart a pallet, sanded it just a bit. (I think this is oak) Then I wrote on it with my scrapbooking markers because that's all I had. Then I went out and bought some paint markers and wrote over it. I'm going to varnish it and either hang it or attach a stake, I haven't decided yet.

Ohhh!! THIS is where I got the inspiration for my sign I just made for my garden shed! A special THANKS to "twomonths" for the phrase "Time began in a garden" in her list of phrases. I didn't remember who, what or where I found the phrase & wasn't able to give credit where credit was due for the inspiration of my sign.

Here are some loosely related to gardening:

Don't piss off the fairies!

Take care of the earth. Someday you'll be part of it.

The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

Do not play leapfrog with a unicorn.

Eagles may soar in the clouds, but weasels never get sucked into jet engines.

Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

There's never time to do it right, but there's always time to do it over. Linda

This thread is right up my alley as I love sayings and quotes! I have a few signs and this thread inspired me to put a couple outside. Still have some packed away that are "real" garden signs. Now *which* box are those in I wonder! LOL

"The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose" Just attached this to my birdhouse.

"faith hope love" This is just sitting on the ladder. This was a freebie at a YS a few years ago.

My fav has already been mentioned: Weeds 4 Sale - U-Pick Must make one of those.

Other "weedy" sayings that I like - can you tell we struggle with weeds! LOL

~Bless My Weeds
~Give a Weed an Inch and itÂll Take A Yard
~Sure it's a Weed... but it has FLOWERS!
~Old weeds never die  they just go to seed
~May all your weeds be wildflowers

Others I also like:

~I garden, therefore I am
~If friends were flowers, I'd pick you
~All I need is my flower gardenÂand chocolate
~Plant the green end up
~Wildflowers grown by a wild woman

I'm inspired to make more signs! Thanks for starting this thread. :-)

I have one by my bird bath that says, "Dip Your Beak, And Cool Your Feathers!"

And, one by my garden that says, "Pray for a good harvest, but keep on hoeing!"

Another by tubs of flowers "True gardeners cannot bear a glove between the sure touch and the tender root."

I've made many signs out of discarded slate roofing. My son is a commercial roofer and I get them from him. Very durable but easy to drill and break if necessary. Also, I have a greeting card software program that will make banners. I just enter my saying and select the font, size, etc. I want and print it out. I've got a ton of old carbon paper from friends and work I use to trace my sayings on. I just love doing them.

I've been lurking in this forum getting ideas for a school garden where I volunteer. You all have great ideas. Very inspiring.

Our local garden shop had some great signs in recently, but they are a bit pricey. Here are my favorites:

On plant marker type signs:

Weedum invasium
Twigga mortis
Gardenitis uncontrollius
Plantus unknownus
Bloomis notimus (Duh, it took me several visits before I realized this one was funny)

On signs and rocks:

Tickle the Earth with a hoe, She laughs with a harvest

If friends were flowers, I'd pick you

This place is for the birds (decorate with bird or two and place it near the bird feeder or birdhouse)

To Weed or
Not to Weed
That is the Garden

Wishing you Butterfly Mornings
Wildflower Afternoons

How Lovely is the Silence of Growing Things

To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow

A beautiful garden is a work of heart

Peace to all who enter here

Bless this garden

Angels help my garden grow

I hope to make a few of these into signs myself. I found a large flat bright yellow plastic platter at a thrift store that may be the "canvas" for my first attempt.

What a fun thread! Cricket's grandfather's sign is part of a poem. I've seen this whole stanza on a garden sign:

The kiss of the sun for pardon,
The song of the birds for mirth,--
One is nearer God's heart in a garden
Than anywhere else on earth.

I really like "I garden therefore I am". Might have a sign in my future!
