Craftsman mower blows fuse when starting

Mike7500July 5, 2013

Sears craftsman 16.HP mower model number 917.272061. Installed new battery and reversed polarity by mistake. Blew 20 Amp fuse. Replaced fuse. Diode from stator was blown. Have not replaced, but rewired inline without diode. When Ignition switch is turned to lights or run position the 20 Amp fuse blows. Ignition switch is fine. Bypassed ammeter. Pulled both Relay assembles. Checked wires for possible ground, still blowing fuses. Checked similar posts but found no solutions. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Assume I need to add a 276-1143 diode back in line to prevent voltage spike that blows 20 amp fuse.

We have a tractor forum. Check it out. Most people use it for their lawn tractor/riding mower questions.

You have 3 relays.
Disconnecting #3 would basically disconnect the charging circuit from the battery and could point to the cause.

Does it blow the fuse when simply turning the key ON or when the key is turned to START?
