Kolher 17.5 OHC won't start after replacing flywheel key

LesHarcAugust 9, 2013

The riding mower is 11 yrs old, and I've never had a problem with it. Last week I ran over a root and sheared the flywheel key, not completely, very little. (That surprised me that it stopped the engine.) I replaced the key, put it back together, but it won't start. It turns over, but backfires through the carb. Someone told me to check the valve rods, to be sure they aren't broken or knocked off the rocker, they are fine. Also made sure the crankshaft turns through the engine. Any ideas

A loose flywheel nut can also cause the key to shear on start-up. Did you tighten it to the specified torque?
