Another Unknown from FL

karyn1(7a)January 28, 2011

I have the pod and seeds from another unknown. It's a bush that's probably a common landscape plant. The leaves are small and a dark glossy green. There's several long thorns on the branches but they aren't super hard. The blooms look kind of like a jasmine but I'm not sure if they are fragrant. Here's a pic of the fruit (over-ripe & unripe) and the seeds which are flat. There's a dime for size comparison. Thanks.

From looking at the seeds, and never having seen such examples of unripe and dead, my guess is the Natal Plum, Carissa macrocarpa, very edible when ripe. It is usually planted as an ornamental near the sea or in dry places. If you think that is what it is you can read about them on my website eattheweeds dot com.

Hi Zorba. Thanks, I should have posted that I already got the ID and it is indeed a natal plum. You'd have thought I would have known because I have a small one in a container here. lol This one was just so much bigger then my little plant.
