Here's another shrub I found growing healthy with green leaves behind a half-dead conifer, which I think I'll chain saw this spring in favor of this one: It's maybe 7 feet tall.

A google image search found it most closely resembles japonica, yes.
Looks to me like Euonymus kiautschovicus 'Manhattan', a very common variety.
Seems that's a better match, thank you. Mine has such an open habit, though, compared to pictures I've seen of both k and j. Probably for lack of pruning and stretching for light from behind the house and the hedge. I kind of like it this way.
