I was not aware that a mantis could be a color other than green. This one was on the Russian Sage in August.

Isn't the mantis the insect--is he an insect?-- which can change its color to blend in with whatever it's near? Or is it that he can stay immovable for so long that his 'prey' is fooled--and then, he pounces!? In your picture, Jim, I had to look closely to see him. Thanks for sharing.

I first thought it was a walking stick, since they are brownish.
All the mantises I had seen here were green. Learn something new every day.
