Unknown Herb

ButcheredGardens ON CAN(6a)March 28, 2014

I planted this back in 2011 and never really knew what it was. If I recall correctly it had small purple flowers. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Has this been outside in 6a all winter? ie is it hardy in your zone? Does it have a scent? Does it have a square cross section stem? Could we see the whole Plant?

Thanks floral-uk for your help. No, these plants died off in the fall of 2011 once the cold weather set in. The plants did have a scent but unfortunately I don't remember exactly what it was like and I don't remember the stems as being square but I could be wrong on that. This is the only other photo I have of these plants. I can add that none of the plants grew more than about 6 inches high before flowering. Any further help is much appreciated. Thankyou.

Thanks for the suggestion Lin. I was told that it's likely Chocolate Mint or something close to that. Any further help is much appreciated. Thankyou.

A mint as in Mentha would have very strong rhizomes near the surface,
and IME they hardly selfseed, just run.

Does it have any scent at all?
Very curious

That looks like Origanum vulgare (oregano) to me. Definitely a mint.

Looks a lot like the chocolate mint I grew in the past - oregano leaves are fuzzy & those look smooth.

Just saw some chocolate mint at my local big box store today; looked just like your plant.
