I was thinking that they are palmettos. They are very common down in Vero Beach were we used to live. We made good money two years in a row selling the palmetto berries in the heat of the summer well over $1,000 dollars. It was hot and humid and the palmettos have thorns, but we endured. We were in need of money then. It was a real blessing from God. My friends let me pick their berries and we had five acres of many palmettos. We had to scare off the Mexicans out front that were on our property picking them. Hubby went out with a gun and fired one shot in the air. They ran and left the berries they picked. So I didn't have to pick them, just pick them up off the road. I wish I could do something like that up here. The palmettos are dwarfs up here. I prefer to make money off of the land if I can instead of getting a "real" job.
