I have a eager 1 mower model # 917.388410 6.75 hp just wondering if anyone could tell me how old it is by model #. carb is dirty, with a lot of dry debris in float and rusty colored all over inside, I will probably replace.
I don't know if Sears is still using the 'Eager 1' brand name, but 6.75 HP should date it fairly recently. The brand started back in the '80s. I'd clean it up and give it a try before getting a new carb. It may be a Tecumseh engine with a brass bolt holding the float bowl on. This bolt is the metering orifice and requires periodic cleaning, particularly the almost-invisible bleed at the top of the threads. You might want to replace the fuel line as they decompose over time and put rubber 'crumbs' in the float bowl. Also clean out the tank and tank outlet filter.
Thanks: hey when you push the primer bulb, carburetor off engine, should you hear/feel air/suction from one of the fuel hose ports, cause I hear/feel nothing.
Looking rusty collared intake hole, when I spin the blade i hear the exhaust, but I can spin it either way slight compression, hope its not a rebuild I am looking at.
Look at the sticker on the deck. The date of manufacture is always listed like this:

The middle set of numbers say: Aug. 19, 1996
thanks looks like mine is a 2000 model, whit dried stuff all over sides and bottom of engine, water in oil, hopefully not a cracked head. compression showed about 10- 15 psi.
Your carb can easily be refurbished. Low compression can be from a valve with crud around the seat or face, almost never from a cracked head, which I've never seen. The rings could be frozen on the piston too and can't expand.

IF this has the plastic bowl carb, you need to get a "bowl kit" which pretty much replaces the guts of the carb.
About $20 if you can find it. Tec has gone out of business, so parts availability might become an issue. I personally don't know if it has or not.
I "think" the kit is PN 730637A, but verify by an independent source. (That's if you have that type carb).

Thanks I found the manual, and parts still can be ordered from sears, ring and valves look great, going to get head gasket( http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-number/36787&pathTaken=partSearch&prst=0?shdPart=36787 ), carb, mine has the metal bowl but is pretty messed up, hoses and should hopefully be good to go.

The "Sears" engine model# is 143.xxxxxx
143 is the code for Tecumseh.
There are conversion charts on the web that decipher the rest of the 143#.
She's running Thanks for all the help baymee, Did everything you told me, and last thing was kill switch, which pointed me to the govener also. I made a make shift linkage and held throttle in different ppositions and she fired up and would die, so I did something else and tied handle back and put starter fluid in and pulled cord and when she fired up i jumped down and manually gave it gas and it stayed running strong, its missing something how do you give it more gas?
Thanks to every one who helped me on this mower, with lincs and whatnot. I used a replacement spring on throttle so I think thats the prob as far as the rpms go.

Most likely the hole just above the arrow in the 11 o'clock position. Look for wear around the hole.
Yep that was it, put in that hole above arrow, with modified spring on other linkage, now it runs great, not bad for a freebe, didn't have to rplace the carb after all, I thought it was done for.I also have video of it running but web on camera isn't working right now.

The carb does look like it's done for. Try using the Macro feature of your camera for close-ups.

That's the part number, available from Sears for $9, but from any shop and cheaper than that.
Thanks' ran across another freebe Its a 95 diamond i/c with the Briggs 5.5 hp engine, commercial use mower, model # 917.372833, won't start, no spark, and plug looks black and oily,couple head bolts were backed out a little, can't find my compression tester. might see if I can get her going, if compression is good. I only get the old ones, the nice looking newer ones don't last long on craigslist and gone by the time I respond. oh well keeps me busy during the winter.

If both are in good shape I will sell the eager 1, and use the Briggs for landscaping business to make enough to buy a newer one.

95 diamond i/c with the Briggs 5.5 hp engine, model # 917.372833 has 20 psi compression, I just through high temp sealant on old head gasket, put rope on from other mower. Hopefully these engines have the compression release features.
I also put in a 1/2 cup oil in the cylinder and let it sit about a couple hours and none leaked down into oil pan same depth from top of piston to cylinder brim. so leak down is next.
Man I must be a magnet to eager 1's, picked this 2000 model 6.75 hp.# 917.377810, same deal though gotta start it with starter fluid,then she runs like a champ, self propelled, band new coil starter, blade, plug and armature, just got to clean the carb and hope that's it, primer seemed like it wasn't sucking gas or anything, just like other one, so maybe that's how there suppose to be,I thought you could feel pressure from sucking gas from tank and sending to carb
I find that side mount carb to be the most troublesome design of all. Sometimes you have to bounce the front wheels to get gas to flow from the tank, even on a clean, rebuilt carb.
I took this eager 1 apart, and cleaned carb(actually looked pretty good, but on reassembly I found a S shaped link under mower rear/transmission side, any idea what its suppose to be hooked up to, i work on a clean basement floor so i know it wasn't there b4, can't find it in the manuals I found so far.
Possibly the link between the cable and the transmission. Show a picture of it.
Sorry for late response been busy putting my Grand prix back together, here is the pic of that s-shaped link I believe it was hanging on let side between wheel and deck, can't find it in engine diagram's.

On second thought, it looks like a large S link which you wouldn't find on a mower. Just a piece of junk on the mower deck.
Yea I don't know it was hanging on the mower rear wheel, I will just keep it in the mower junk box in case I find a place for it, last owner was probobly mowing and didn't want to run over, so sat it on the deck and it worked it's way to the wheel.. Thanks bud
well put to much oil in and started smoking like crazy, so not knowing you coould just tip mower over to drain oil, i started tearing the blade etc. off to get to oil drain plug, after collar that balde sits on came off so did a spring and some sort of bearing(?), my gues was spring went between the bearing that fell out and the one sealed in the motor, but I put it back together started it and loud knocking noise possibly rattling, bolt is tight as i could get it. you know if spring sits between bearing and blade collor?
I forgot about sears parts direct, I found the diagram.

Put it back together and started it and still making loud knocking noise, hope i didn't bust the shaft putting those spring and washer on wrong, or run with not enough oil after draining. compression is 50 psi.
suggestion's, wasn't very powerful going up any type of hill, so if i messed up engine, no big loss. just 40 bucks.
well defiantly messed something up, started it to pin point knocking, and something flew out from under mower turned out to be a chunk of the blade adapter, so for some reason the shaft is banging around,(unless it just cracked when spring and washer were backwards and continued to bang around after adapter cracked)going to take apart and see if i missed something on reassembly, got blade/adapter off and shear pin was visible and sheered a bit..
weigh out differences.....repair/get another mower,
thinking about getting another since my yard and most others I mow have hillclimbs. Gets the job done but slow on climbs

hi, i have hooked up my linkages to my throttle and to the govenor but for what ever reason i don't seem to have any change in speed when i move the throttle. Am i missing a piece somewere, can't figure it out.thx.
