2 shrubs and a tree

neen_5mi(z5 MI)May 9, 2012

I'm doing serious honeysuckle removal this summer and don't want to kill good stuff. Can anyone identify these, please?

Plant A is a tree blossoming now, 30 ft tall, with seedlings/saplings everywhere.

Plant B grows at the edge of a trail, about 3 ft tall.

Plant C grows in deep shade, less than 1 ft tall.

Thank you.

If C. was here I'd say it was a gooseberry, Ribes uva-crispa. But I don't know US native Ribes, so it may be some other kind of currant/gooseberry.

We do have gooseberry. I hope that's it! Perhaps I can transplant some of it out of the poison ivy and closer to the house.

Thank you.

Plant A looks like a Viburnum (there can be some tall, tree-like ones), plant B looks like a privet.

My guess would be Viburnum lentago for A.

The gooseberry is probably one of our native ones. They are easier to ID if you have the flowers or fruit.

I think you're right re Viburnum lentago. I'm glad I didn't run out and buy one to plant. My property is full of it!

I'm going to take a branch of the privet-looking one to our extension office for certain ID. If confirmed, I need to get rid of it before it takes hold.

Thank you all for your input.
