unknown shade plant

greatscotMay 24, 2013

This plant is growing in a shady area of my garden and I don't know what it is. It has large leaves and is about 12 inches high at this point. I don't remember what it has done in previous year in terms of flowers. I'm not sure if it's a native plant or even a weed. The leaves are quite attractive. Any ideas? This picture was taken this morning, May 24th.

It is bloodroot, Sanguinaria canadensis. Native to the U.S.

Thanks. I saw that one online and wondered if that was what it was. The leaves looked similar but I didn't think it looked tall enough from the pictures I saw. Actually looking at descriptions of the plant again it must have flowered already. I have lots of different things flowering in early spring so perhaps I didn't notice it. But I don't remember seeing flowers quite like that. I'll need to look more closely next spring.
