That certainly looks like Celastrus orbiculatus (Asian bittersweet) to me. Northern Virginia sure doesn't need more of it.

Check the color of the roots. It they are yellow/orange it's bittersweet.
Most dogwoods have opposite leaves while bittersweet has alternate.
The leaves of your plant do not look like dogwood.
