Plant Id Tree? Young Red tinted leaves

okrisstea(7 N Georgia)May 3, 2014

This tree or bush is popping up all over my mostly shaded wooded yard. The new leaves are reddish and then turn green. The stem is smooth. Any idea what this is before I attack them with the mower?

Hmm, might be tree of heaven. can you show a closer picture of one of those leaflets? If you break a piece, does the plant smell bad?

Yes Ailanthus altissima. You definitely want to pull those out.

Here is a better picture of the leaves. I picked a branch and crushed the leaves and stem. No unpleasant smell.

I don't think it is tree of heaven then, but I don't know what it is. Can you tell if each of these "branches" is a compound leaf or a true branch with a bunch of individual leaves?

Have you looked around to see what other mature trees are growing nearby?

Is this in a wild area, a garden or near a garden?
