Speaking of Solstice (a poem)

lilod(NoCal/8)June 21, 2011

Speaking of Solstice

Summer arrived abruptly this year;

A little earlier than scheduled.

She did not have to evict Spring,

Spring was absent without leave

Left us with cold rain, cold nights

Dark days

Left us frustrated, wanting to experience

seasonal change.

Spring Flings

Birds and bees and peepers

Walking through the woods

We missed the fragrance of Madrone blooming

The scent a blend of Orange blossoms, Jasmine and Patchouli

So Summer stepped in,

No nonsense now, she said.

Now the grass is brown

Madrone is shedding, going to sleep.

Summer shall give us hot days

And cool nights

We better get used to it.

How true, even where I live.

Mother Nature has never learned to "practice moderation in all things", IMO! It's usually either too hot or too cold, too wet or too dry, rarely "just right". Guess that's why the poem says, "What is so rare as a day in June?"

Nice poem, Lilo.

Nice poem about the summer solstice. I certainly can identify with the topic and the sentiments that you wrote.
Spring was defenitely MIA this year.

Loved it. It was a strange spring for all. We fried in heat or drowned in rain. I was celebrating the soltice today and wondering what summer would bring. I cannot complain about spring.........our property looks like a tropical rainforest and the mornings and evenings are ethereal in the mist. But, having gardened all my life, I'm having to just play it by ear this year as it seems like Earth Mother just threw out the rule book. ;-)

This definitely was a strange spring. Some things never had a chance to bloom, some did twice and some are missing.
Love your poem.

With all the rain we had, sluggs should be in abundance. The birds are missing their morning treat under the birdbath, a surefire way to find some. Not a one to found, nor in the hostas or anywhere else. Asked my son who has a slugg haven back by the alley, has not seen any this year either.

The slugs came to my raised bed. Let's say that they are not with us any longer.

Thanks Lilod. I really like your poem. I put some music on the page. If you are on Firefox, you may not be able to play the mp3, they said their flash crashed. It works well on other browsers.
