What lawn to plant

James.Yale(12)August 20, 2011

I live in the San Jaquin valley of California and have approx. 10K sq ft of hybrid bermuda. My biggest issue currently is the thinning of the lawn. Due to the summer heat here in the valley we have many shade trees. Over the years the lawn has thinned out severely in these shady areas and is completely gone in some areas. I have the trees trimmed up high to allow optimum light without sacrificing shade. We entertain frequently which is also compacting the soil. The bermuda looks great in the open areas but doesn't tolerate the shade. I would like to know if there is another variety of grass I can mix with the bermuda that will better tolerate the shade and also the traffic?

Take a look at Tifgrand Bermuda. It is fairly new, and has excellent shade tolerance for Bermuda, and should mix well with your existing hybrid.
