Name of this small spring blooming tree??

w1ldflower(5)May 29, 2014

This one was found at a local park/garden (upstate NY, zone 5). First time I have been lucky enough to catch it in flower. There were some brown seed pods still attached to the tree from the previous season, about 3 inches in length and maybe half as wide, shaped kind of like a Christmas ornament (sorry, I'm an artist, not a botanist). Hoping someone can put a name to it. Thanks for your help!
