Please ID - weed or keeper?

syndi(6)May 18, 2012

The first plants got started in my yard after planting perennials that had been neglected at a greenhouse that burnt down. The perennials had sat in their pots outside for around 2 years so anything could have started in them. There are a few photos of this years plants and some of photos I took last year when there were larger.

The second plant is trailing and has spikes with purple flowers. Only a few of the flowers remain.

Are these keepers?

I agree about the second one being ajuga. I have several in my yard, and they are pretty common perennials/groundcovers, though mine have darker "chocolate" leaves -- it comes in several shades.

I don't recognize the first one as any perrenial or flowering plant that I know, and it looks like a bush seedling or sapling to me, saltcedar's idea sounds likely.
