flipguy_phMay 21, 2009

I recently moved to our new home. I have 3 thorny bushes in our back yard. they are currently 2 1/2 feet. i havent seen any flowers yet. They look nice but im not suer what to do with them. the started out green and are now growing reddish branches and leaves. the have a soft spine on the branches that wont be kid friendly. Are they worth keeping?

thanks!!!

Berberis thunbergii variety. Yellow flowers in spring, small bright red berries in autumn. Usually great autumn colour. Can grow three to four feet high and about three feet wide. Take out the old stems. Wear gloves that reach well up your arms, chain mail, motorcycling protection, goggles - whatever...

those thorns are FIERCE! and can be very hard to extract.

Should be OK with kids so long as there's a low risk of them falling into the shrub or trying to retrieve toys.

One quick way to check is to cut a stem. Barberry has bright yellow wood under the bark.

Has gone wild over a large area, should probably no longer be planted and cultivated in much of the country.
