thorny purple flowering shrub?

robing4May 20, 2013

I have a lot of these plants. They come up voluntarily each year and seem to spread easily. I am wondering what they are. They range in height from inches to 3 or 4 feet. The older growth is woody and new growth is covered with fine thorns that look like hair.
