Help! What IS this?

I can't believe we are having so much difficulty identifying this plant - you would think with the leaf scars and the grey green leaves and purple veins it wouldn't be so mysterious.....Help?

Left over Brassica, maybe flowering Kale?

I thought it might be flowering kale also but with the milky white outer coating on the shoots....not so much. Leaves weren't right for Brassica from what I have found so far....that was my first thought also. :-(

It is a very old, very starved Kale. Definitely a Brassica. Compost material.
