surprise in the garden any idea what it is

wife found this in her garden don't know what it is. does anybody have any ideas?

Perhaps an Anchusa volunteer or something similar from the Boraginaceae family.

First thought was some Aster but that doesn't really fit

Is it in a damp location? It is very reminiscent of Pulicaria dysentarica but that is a European wild flower and I don't know if it is likely in your location. It would have yellow daisy flowers if it is.

As soon as I said Butterfly weed my wife was like oh yeah now I remember. She just thought it was another casualty of winter. I guess it was just waiting to make sure Mother Nature was actually done just teasing us with spring. Thanks for your help.
