Something eating my lawn

jwaldisOctober 8, 2007

Something has eaten a large area of lawn, cutting the grass off at ground level. The area is under a filbert/hazelnut tree, and lots of nuts have fallen on the grass and have been eaten by ?squirrels. It has been a very dry summer.

There are a number of ~1/2 inch holes in the area which were easily seen when the dead grass had been removed. Overnight it was easy to see a large number tracks (about the width of the hole) connecting the holes.

Is this from grubs? When digging up the soil around the holes I was unable to find any, but I canÂt think of anything else which could do this much damage.

I can send photographs of the holes and the tracks if anybody is interested in seeing them.

Thanks for any help.

Posting pictures would probably help.

Here is a thread that gives excellent instructions on how to post pictures.

It may be skunks. I woke up one morning to find my front yard tore all to pieces. I presume a skunk was searching for grubs. I was able to trap him the next day and move him far away

Here are a couple of pictures of the mess under my dead grass. You can clearly see the tracks from ?? going between the holes in the dirt.

Those are some odd tracks, clearly some creature dragging itself along or tunneling, not grubs, skunks, rabbits, or squirrels, but what?? I would say moles or voles but only 1/2 inch wide??? Dwarf field mouse with a bumb leg????
