Aromatic perennial or weed?

hokiegirl02June 27, 2014

This woody plant comes back each year (we have lived here two years) but also pops up new plants in our beds. It is very aromatic - thought it was some sort of mint or citronella- and has a purple flower that is near bloom. It has a silver green leaf and the established plants are atleast 3 feet tall. Grows in a mostly sunny area. Thoughts??

Thanks teacats! I guess it just grows like a weed, lol. Unfortunately the artemisia pics dont quite look like this leaf - close, but a little off. Do you have a specific variety in mind? I was looking on bhg for pics.

With purple flowers, not likely Artemisia. Looks more like a Perovskia to me. My Perovskia produce seedlings here and there. Should add that it is not a weed but is a nice perennial.

If it gets purple flowers it's not artemisia.

I think it's russian sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia).

Ok, i once looked at sage varieties but didnt make the match...now i have found its photo match on the web and it is definitely Russian sage. Thank you!! I am a novice but we bought a house with amazing, though neglected, beds - I am fumbling my way through the summer, trying to get them into shape.

I also think it's Russian Sage. I love'em! They have a long, long, long bloom period..seem to peak in the torrid days of late Summer and linger into Autumn. Excellent for...heat, drought, floral display..., oh, and deer HATE them!

Although its common name is Russian Sage it is not a true sage, Salvia, so looking at sages wouldn't turn it up. It is, as others have said, definitely Perovskia.
