What the heck is it??

ferngully_(5)June 12, 2014

This just popped up overnight, knocking over the astilbe that was occupying the spot next to it. I just moved into the house this summer so I've had quite a few surprises but I was pretty sure everything had already come up when I spotted this guy. It looks similar to a peony but I know it can't be that due to how late in the season we are. It's planted in a fully shaded border garden against the house. I hope it's not a weed but I have no idea!

It's a new Astilbe shoot.

Oh fantastic! What should I do with the knocked over astible? Leave it? Stake it? Cut it away?

I don't think the new shoot can have knocked over the older stem. I'm pretty sure that happened some other way. If it is a flowering stem you could prop it up until the flower is finished and then cut it back. But really it doesn't matter what you do with it. The plant will be fine.
