What is this?

jillcatt(4)June 26, 2014

Can anyone identify this plant that has randomly appeared in my yard? I'm guessing a bird dropped a seed. It's about 4 1/2 feet tall, with yellow flowers beginning to open on the top stalk and fuzzy leaves, kind of like lambs' ears. Thanks!

If you like birds, you might want to keep it! I don't find that it is bad for reseeding in my garden - and it is pretty cool, as Ken says!

Here is a link that might be useful: benefit of mullein

Thx ottawavalley; I didn't know it until now that birds use this stuff. I just happen to like common mullein.

It's been a spring ritual for a few years to find a mullein volunteering somewhere in a garden bed. Never planted one, and there is never more than one volunteer a year and it comes up the next year someplace quite a distance from the previous year. I haven't found it yet this year. I like them.

Butterflies luv this wildflower! The flowers smell nice, too. I wouldn't pull it out of my garden....

Verbascum thapsus - yes, it self seeds but it is no trouble to uproot if it puts itself where you don't want it. Not a horrible weed in my book. it's hardly going to spoil the area in the OPs garden there.
