Can anyone help with a name for this plant?
Looks like a Colosacia, not an Alocacia common name of both is Elephant ear. The 'flower' which is not open yet (spathe & spadix) is the clue. Hope this helps a bit!
Thanks carmellawinecroft. The leaves are similar, but the flower when open doesn't look like those (I think - I googled..). It opens to a bell shaped flower - brown and white spotted/striped. It grows to about thirty cm and spreads like mad! I wasn't sure if it was a succulent or not, and I am hoping to grow it from these cuttings
If it's a bell shaped flower it is definitely not a Colosacia! Sorry I don't know what it is! If it has flowered perhaps you can repost a pict of the plant material with the flower in all it's glory! is it hardy where you live? Perennial? houseplant? What zone? Now I'm curious as to what it really is!! tee hee!
I picked up a green house yesterday from a place three hours from here which used to be a nursery. This plant was growing everywhere on the property - it almost looks like an aquatic plant. The picture I had is all I have unfortunately :( It is extremely similar to the pic below (Arisaema franchetianum), but the flower isn't exactly identical. The lady said it dies completely in the summer, but comes back like mad in the autumn/winter...
So this plant is growing in Australia in your back yard?
Oh your "flower" looks like Arisaema....
Yes, this plant is growing in a backyard in Echuca :)
Found it! Friars Cowl :) thanks for your help ;)
