Ogden Nash of food.

Don't agree with him but love his rhymes.

THE PARSNIP

The parsnip, children, I repeat

is simply an anemic beet.

Some people call the parsnip edible,

Myself, I find this claim incredible.

ASPIC

What a pity that aspic

Doesn't rhyme with elastic,

Because, Gee Whiz

It is.

CELERY

Celery, raw

Develops the jaw

But celery stewed.

Is more quickly chewed.

Love Ogden Nash! One of my favorites is the one about getting someone relaxed and in the mood. I forget the title but the verse is:

Candy is dandy,
But likker is quicker.

Wonderful!

But, aspic DOES rhyme with elastic (to me, anyway) doesn't it?

Nash added added "Pot is not" in the 60's to " Candy is Dandy, but Likker is quicker.

I love Russel Hoban's character Frances the Badger (great children's stories illustrated by Lillian Hoban). Here are her "Egg Thoughts"

Soft Boiled

I do not like the way you slide,
I do not like your soft inside,
I do not like you many ways,
and I could do for many days
without a soft boiled egg.

Sunny-side Up

With their yolks and whites all runny
they are looking at me all funny.

Sunny-side Down

Lying face down on the plate
On there stomachs there they wait.

Poached

Poached eggs on toast, why do you shiver
with such a funny little quiver?

Scarmbled

I eat as well as I am able,
but some falls underneath the table.

Hardboiled

With so much suffering today
why do them any other way?

I agree with gandle's statement.
Wish I could do the rhymes.
Lol, I can cook a lot better than I can rhynme.

Smash parsnips with potatoes and you've got a delishious , lower cal smashed dish. Yum.

sara_the_brit_, yes, in my mind aspic rhymes with elastic, and I've done some homemade gelatinous aspics that can probably strech for miles. I prefer the store bought broth.

HOLLANDAISE

I sing the praise of Hollandaise,
A sauce supreme in many ways.
Not only is it a treat to us
When ladled on asparagus,
But I would shudder to depict
A world without Eggs Benedict.

ICEBERG LETTUCE

I cheerfully forgive my debtors,
But I'll never pardon Iceberg Lettuce.
A pallid package of rigidity,
I hope I'll never be so punchy,
As to relish my salad crisp and crunchy,
Yet garden lettuce with leafy head
Is as hard to get as unsliced bread.

THE PIONEER

I seek in anonymity's cloister
Not him who ate the first raw oyster,
But one who, braving spikes and prickles,
With infinite patience and fortitude
Unveiled the artichoke as food.

YORKSHIRE PUDDING

Let us call Yorkshire pudding
A fortunate blunder;
It's sort of a popover
That tripped and popped under.

Gandle what great chuckles before my late bedtime. Each one as good or better than the last. Thanks for taking the time to post them all.

Tibs those eggs ones are a riot. Thanks for sharing.

Btw, I must agree with Hollandaise.

Gandle, thanks for posting. I sent DS the poems about food and he wrote right back with a ditty of his own. And this one is personal, Lol,,,,,

I hate broccoli,
My dad does too,
We won't even eat it,
if it's covered with goo.

Are those things arms or is they legs?

If I were thou I'd call me Us.
