Native? Some type of sweetpea?

modern_WVJune 10, 2014

Please help me identify this plant, growing along the rural roadway in mountainous eastern WV. Rocky soil, mountain laurel and Virginia pine are plentiful -- and then this, seems to be spreading or reseeding in steep areas. Am guessing it's some sort of vetch family by the foliage; would love to transfer some to start on a recently graded steep hill near my new construction, but no idea if it is native -- or if it will transplant successfully.

Here's another pic of the same plant in a large grouping.

Perhaps Tephrosia virginiana. It would be better to collect seed than to dig up wild plants.

Thank you lycopus - that's IT! And I found some pics online if what it looks like when it goes to seed, handy seed pods and all. I'll be gathering those in the fall! Appreciate your help.
