Why weasels go pop: behind the nursery rhymes

anntn6b(z6b TN)August 16, 2008

This is one of the neatest things I've read in a long time. For years I've wondered what the olde, olde rhymes meant. They are imbedded in my brain from child hood.

I never came close to guessing the reasons.

(Although the Black Death and Ring around the Rosey made me a little less likely to want to deciper them.)

Here is a link that might be useful: Pop goes the weasel

Thanks, Ann. My granddaughter who is going on 3 is just getting into these nursery rhymes like Ring around the Rosey. I knew the origin of that one (rather unpleasant thoughts) but I always wondered about the weasel. Fun link!

The though suddenly occurs to me that it's the ME equivalent of modern rap... spontaneous, instantaneous, reflective of the immediate circumstances and prevailing emotions.

Thank you.
