Pictures taken late February, when stuff started blooming.
It looks much fuller and greener now, but here you can see the trunk.
And here is a close-up of the blooms.
I'm thinking maybe some kind of crabapple tree? But I could be way off.
The bark looks like cherry, or, at least, a prunus of some sort.
doesnt look like crab bark ... more like prunus .,., rather than malus ...
i would guess at purple plum
Here is a link that might be useful: link
Definitely an ornamental cherry. Compare with Prunus 'Okame' to see if it fits.
Ah, I think it's Prunus "Okame". Makes sense, because the previous owners planted a prunus "kanzan" nearby, and also possibly some sort of weeping cherry tree.
Sounds like the Okame can get pretty big: 20-30 ft tall, and 12-20 tf spread. WHYYY would they plant is there?! *facepalm* These people did NOT space stuff out right. >:-(
Should I be trimming off some of the lower branches, or is this the type of thing I should just leave alone?
I would trim off the lower branches to show off its beautiful trunk.
trim the branches when dormant, I think. Easier on the tree.
