What is this large plant?

EmmarooJuly 30, 2014

I saw this at an open garden held by the Garden Conservancy. It covered quite a large area (30 feet by 30 feet) but was only about 3 feet tall. Can anyone tell me what it is? I'd loved some in my yard. Thanks!

I trust carrieb's identification, but if you want to look it up, I believe it's Leucothoe with a "u".
