Tree identification

KarlsgodtJuly 15, 2013

Would like help in identifying this tree. It is planted in my yard next to the house and has grown from about 12 to about 20 feet since I moved in three years ago. It looks like it might be some sort of cherry tree, but I have never seen fruit on it.

Can we see the bark to aid the ID.
Right now I'd guess a Pear.

Thanks, I won't be home until after dark this evening, but I'll try to get a photo of the trunk in the morning.

Here's the trunk.

A related question - should the extra branch coming up from the ground be pruned, and if so, when is the time to do it?
