Growing Weeping Pussy Willows from Seeds Help!

anniebee81(6)January 19, 2014

I just acquired about 20 weeping pussy willow seeds and have no idea how to start them. I know the best way is to start from a clipping, but I don't have that option. Any help on how to start them, time frames, general info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Annie

Annie, PFAF database: Salix caprea pendula
Seed - must be surface sown (not covered and at approx. 70F) as soon as it is ripe in late spring. It has a very short viability, perhaps as little as a few days. Typically grown from grafted cuttings.

If you have seeds now, they are likely several months old.

So essentially the seeds I have will not likely be viable?

It depends on how old they are and how they have been stored. If stored dry and at room temperature, like Morz said, they go bad very quickly.

I think I may be out of luck then. Thanks.
