Stratify and scarify(what does that mean)

I'm having a memory lapse.What does stratify and scarify seeds mean.Debbie

Stratify - provide a moist chill, or simulation of winter's cold (to break seed's dormancy)

Scarify - opening the outer seed coat by sandpapering, nicking or puncturing so that water may enter.

There is also warm stratification, self explanatory I think.
