cold hardy kiwi

baci(z10Ca)February 4, 2006

Has anyone started cold hardy kiwi in the refrigerator? If so, what media was used, what technique worked well for you, & how was damping off prevented? I am having trouble with stratification in my climate. Weather is often warm mid winter, & I can not get enough chill.

IF the seed has dried out then a cold period (@ 40F) of 3-4 weeks is required. Storing in the vegi keeper for that time will be enough. I do this in a plastic bag & have no problem with damping off at this time....... Then lightly cover the seed with soil soil temp 65-70F & takes 14-21 days to germinate.damping off is eliminated or delayed if there is good air circulation over the seed

Thanks for your post, George. When you store your seeds in the refrigerator, do you put them in a damp media or wet paper towel prior to storing or just put the dry seeds in the refrigerator? What kind of media do you use? The fuzzy kiwi germinates well in peat, but the cold hardy variety has decreased germination & damping off. I want to try a different media before I run out of seeds.
