Plant Identification Cactus like

This is a plant located on a trail on Kanopolis Lake, Near Marquette, KS, I think that it is maybe in the Cactus Family A very tough outer shell, but is Black and slightly green inside and the ones that looked dead and dried out were black and rotten looking inside. They come off a base plant that has sharp leaves.

How about Yucca glauca, the Great Plains or soapweed yucca? I grew some from seed here and they lasted a few years but our climate was not to their liking, probably too hot and too dry for too long. Yuccas are in the Agavaceae family, actually, more akin to lilies than cactus.
