Cut one open and see if it resembles an apple (Malus). If so then you have a crabapple (also Malus).

if you dont know the difference between a fruit and a berry ...
i would suggest .... that you be extremely careful in sticking things in your mouth ...
and asking a bunch of strangers on the web itself.. is suspect ...
try to find a local program for learning about all that kind of stuff... contact a local community college... local garden clubs... or Provencal Ag offices to find such ...
Ken, the fruit is the size of a serviceberry, but I wasn't planning to eat it anyway ;-)
