This plant popped up in the middle of my lawn. I was curious, so I have mowed around it all summer. All along, I thought it was a corn stalk... but then last night it started "blooming" out of the top of the stalk. Can anyone identify this?

pps: plants that are production crops ... will do weird things in the middle of a well fertilized lawn ... the fert formulas would cause such ...

Thanks to both. It certainly does seem to be Sorghum, now that I know what Sorghum is. I have grown corn in the garden before and I thought this resembled a young plant - until I saw the flower head/bloom. The stalk elongated pretty dramatically in the past 48 hours or so. FWIW, there isn't any chemical fertilizer in the lawn - just compost and corn gluten applied in the spring.

Oh well, it was an interesting experiment, despite it ultimately being a worthless plant (for my purposes, anyway).
