alarimerAugust 17, 2014

Can anyone identify his plant?it has grown to be. Over five feet tall. When the leaves are rubbed it smells faintly of a lavender or floral scent. It is present smell. It is growing in our bed of Black-eyed Susan. When we first saw this house last summer at an open house, this end was only Black-eyed Susan.

Could it be mugwort?

Hm -- now that you mention that, esh_ga, I do see some divided leaves in the first photo in the center right and lower right.

Could we see the leaves lower on the main stem?

Does the smell suggest chrysanthemum?

As it happened, I ran into some unmistakeable mugwort this afternoon, and esh_ga is correct: definitely mugwort in the photo!

alarimer, you need to know that it spreads -- extremely aggressively -- by roots (rarely by seeds). Roundup may or may not be somewhat effective (reports differ).

I've read in a couple of places that mugwort likes alkaline soils and dislikes acidic soils, so theoretically acidifying the soil might help -- but that's all I know.

Mine came in a load of dirt five years ago, and I doubt I'll ever be rid of it.
