Weed/Plant ID

cheerwine(7)August 23, 2014

I am seeking help for identifying two types of weeds/plants in my backyard. I have borrowed some books about weed, but I was not able to find them. Please help me identify them so that I can remove them. I tried to hand pull them, but they are back again even after I put pine needles on top of them.

The first one emerged in Spring, and bloomed in Summer with purple/blue flower. It is hard to pull its root out. It's leaves are soft.

Here is a picture of the second weed/plant. It first appears in Spring as well. It grows like ground cover and had no flowers so far. It is easy to pull it out, but it comes back again now.

1st looks very much a coreopsis to me - & there are many different types.

2nd looks like a portulaca - are the leaves succulent? (That is, thick & smooth & 'juicy'?)

The second plant looks like sedum acre. It's actually sold as a 'steppable' groundcover, but it spreads very aggresively and is difficult to get rid of by pulling, because even the smallest pieces readily reroot and spread.
