Is this a good guy or a bad guy?

GGPMAugust 14, 2014

A couple of these have showed up in my yard this year. I cannot figure out what they are but want to make sure I am not encouraging a problem down the road.

Location: Portland, OR USA, Outside

Garden vs. wild: Probably brought by a helpful bird, in my front garden.

Type of plant: The base of the plant is woody. Smooth leaves, two directly opposite from each other up the stem. Very upright. Stems smooth, no hairs.

Physical characteristics:18" high
Flowers: Single flowers in late June - I think they were yellow at the end of the stem, now has three red berries you can see in the image.

Thank you for your help! Also showing up this year is a strawberry type ground cover (not edible, small bright red berries). Too invasive or should I let it go? Prefer it over the weeds I am battling.

Thank you for any help!

Hypericum. That looks like one of the shrub types and not the stoloniferous subshrub H. calycinum, a ground covering plant I don't particularly like.

I've grown H. inodorum, purchased, and find that one a reasonable woodland plant, but it will self sow.

Thank you! That's it! I'll keep it... Now about that strawberry groundcover that showed up. What to do? I think it's 50/50 keep or pull.

Do you have a photo of the strawberry-like plant?

You might check out Duchesnia indica for your strawberry like plant. I'm in NJ, though, don't know if you'd have the same thing. If that is it, pull it. It's a very vigorous weed here.
