How to prune my CL Joseph's Coat climber

marijon_gardenerFebruary 21, 2011

I am still a neophyte with roses. My Joseph's Coat climber has been in the ground two years, has a very thick cane (1"diameter) and many other canes. I have been reading about pruning and it seems I should be cutting this large cane out but it seem so central to the plant, I am a little reluctant to prune away. I would love some guidance. Thanks.

Marijon, You don't say where you are located -- but if you were in my area, I would say that a major pruning of this rose is not needed at this time.
In my Southern CA area, a 2-year-old climber of this type is still immature.
Can you say where you are located?

As long as that very thick cane is still producing blooms, leave it be. You don't just prune thick canes on a climber unless there is a good reason, bare bottom, not producing flowers, dieback, canker, etc.
As stated, a two year old climber is not mature yet.
