Peonies from seed?

cherie_zone5April 23, 2010

Is it possible to get volunteer peonies?Ihave about 13 small plants that look a lot like peony. They are on a small berm that I didn't pay a lot of attention to last year, didn't dead head or cultivate around the existing peonies. Have a couple tree peonies planted there as well as two herbaceous.

Both types can self sow in the right conditions if not deadheaded - I leave the seed pods on my tree peony for additional interest and often get volunteer seedlings around it. If you want to keep the seedlings, be patient - it can take a few years before they begin to flower.
