Can anyone identify the seed pod I was given? Deciduous tree. Zone 7, NC. The picture shows both the seed and the unopened pods. The seeds are very hard and about 1/4" in diameter.
Can you describe the tree - how tall, what shape leaf, etc.? Would it be a native tree or perhaps a non-native one?
I thought it was a saucer magnolia, but I can't seem to find any images of the seed pod. It has large leaves. This tree is about 20' tall with very few limbs. I do not remember seeing the blooms this spring. I do not know if it is native. I have never seen these pods before.
Yep, I just opened one of my pods and philmont is exactly right. Calycanthus floridus is the native one, but you may be looking at a cultivar or hybrid.
I believe you're right, although the tree these are on have surpassed the 10' height. It's most likely a very old tree given the surrounding plantings.
