Quick question about the Common Lilac seedlings I got yesterday

ilovemytrees(5b/6a Western, NY)April 29, 2014

When I opened the box and looked at the trees, which are absolutely adorable, I noticed the Ebay seller sent me an extra one. It's tiny, about 4-5 inches tall, and it had it's own root system. Does that mean this is a first year plant? It had 2 tiny leaves and its trunk was a lot smaller than the other ones.

Is this seedling too small to plant in the ground? Should we have put it in a pot til it grew a little more? We didn't have much time to think about it. We got the trees at 8am and dh had to be at work at 10am, so we planted them all and mulched them with cedar mulch.
