new shrub needed

lowjo1(5)April 23, 2012

Working on tweeking front landscape. Creating new bed in front of neighbor's split rail fence. Filling in with knockout roses. Landscapcer recommended spruce in this space. I think it will grow too big. Looking for large shrub (or possibly a small tree) to put at the end of this bed. Would appreciate any suggestions!

There's like a million varieties of "spruce"- what one were they wanting to use?

What sort of light does this area see?
How close will be truly be to that large tree behind it?
How large a diameter do you want it to be? How tall?
Do you want something evergreen or seasonal?

Are you trying to screen the neighbor's view? Maybe a tall hedge would work better than a tree; you can also use it as background to the roses. Choices I've seen/used ninebark, viburnum, lilac, Rose of Sharon.

Why are you removing the birch?
