Pussy willow

yugoslavaApril 19, 2013

I never fail to get some pussy willow in early spring. It so happens other people like them too. We happen to wonder what kind of willow produce catkins. The size of the shrub and growth pattern? If it's a reasonable kind of growth and well behaved we would like to plant it. I have seen a standard in my neighborhood. Would that be a better way to get pussy willow? Thanks!

All willows produce catkins - it's how they flower. But some of the showiest of the genus are the shrub willows, a number of which are grown specifically for their spring catkins. All like moist soils but many will tolerate regular garden soil as well.

Salix caprea
Salix discolor
Salix discolor 'Rosea' - pink pussy willow
Salix chaenomeloides 'Mt. Aso' - giant red pussy willow
Salix gracilistyla 'Melanostachys' - black pussy wilow
Salix sachalinensis 'Sekka' - fantail or contorted pussy willow

Routine harvesting of the catkin-bearing stems as they appear in spring will keep all of these willow shrubs at a mangeable size.
