Small red berries, Brooklyn

I frequently see small red berries when hiking, though sometimes it's in the colder months, when the leaves are gone. The fact that birds haven't eaten them suggests they are poisonous. I don't know if all the small red berries I see in New York are the same, or if there are different ones.

Or Prunus serotina which I believe is more likely in N America.
