red spiky fruit w/ orange center

A friend of mine is trying to identify a tree in her yard that bears strange fruit. I think it's a type of Dogwood but before she tries the fruit we'd like to be 100% certain.

It does look very much like the fruit of the Dogwood, Cornus kousa, but I don't want to be the one to say eat it. Wait for more confirmation. I thought the fruit was pretty bland anyway?

C. kousa is absolutely edible and is a favorite of 'old-timers' and others as a jelly, jam, or preserve. Good eaten out of hand, too.

Said to be eaten by monkeys in nature. Now there's some real old timers.
